So I've been using Polaris bios editor and using their one click tuning, so far it's helped out on every card I've done it on. Just be safe, backup the original flash with ATIWinFlash (which you need anyway to flash them) and then you can always restore it.
Generally, if you are concerned, just err on the side of caution and do one card at a time, meaning only one card connected to your motherboard when you mod it. Totally bricking the card isn't too likely, although it can happen. Your biggest risk factor is going to be on any card that still has a manufacturer warranty. If it croaks due to a defect while the bios is modded, the manufacturer will deny any claims.
Only you can figure out if you want to mod your cards or not. There are risks and there are benefits. Do the benefits outweigh the risks to you? There are hundreds of tutorials on how to mod. Probably for each specific card that you have, too. Spend some time on Google.
Cards in stock just arent configured properly for mining, consequently running cards stock I believe does more damage as they run much hotter. If the core is underclocked and undervolted, the memory kept the same or slightly overclocked and memory straps applied you are de-stressing your card. It will run cooler and use less energy while increasing the hashrate.
The one click method is really pretty solid. I have seen about 10-15% increase in hash rate on modded cards, which really adds up if you have more than one card.

You'll need:

and if you're running windows:

Err on the side of caution. Read the tutorials, and if you are uncertain or uncomfortable, ask questions before you leap!
Do not forget to disable windows update or it could replace your drivers automatically.
And while slowly rising your memclock with afterburner, use hwinfo to check mem error count and lower the clock as soon as you have some errors.
