I have 2 old laptops. One with ubuntu and one with Windows that I can use.
Do you know the minimum hardware specs needed to run the software and mine?
Someone once said... "If you can run linux, you can run ethereum."
It needs a lot of ram to build - and if your machines available are like mine - 1 GB or less RAM - I'd suggest adding a good sized swap partition. I got away with 4 GB of swap, and got the CLI version built and working. Look up how to add a swap partition, there's nothing to it.
Mining, however, is a different story. I think you need 4 GB of ram minimum.

We try to keep the wiki up-to-date with the latest build/installation information. Check it out here: https://github.com/ethereum/go-ethereum/wiki/Building-Ethereum(Go)
Soon, we hope to have automated binaries produced for all major platforms.
