You could stop X by switching to runlevel 3: init 3 or stopping the login manager: (if gdm and this command is available) gdm-stop or stop the login manager service: service gdm stop
anyway with ethOS, you shouldn't install drivers, (ethos could break when using apt/dpkg), the whole purpose of it is the mining basesetup there's ethos-upgrade or something similiarly named command to upgrade for newer versions which probably has your wanted driver

I'll look into that. I think I have the newest ethOS, but my cards still didn't work.
