Very nice to share your August tips in December For anyone actually trying to follow this guide - don't use driver version before 16.9.1 or after 16.11.5. Save yourself few unnecessary steps. Reference cards are good but sometimes one may consider non-reference models.

thought that to about driver , but what about the atikmdag.sys, most time windows 10 detect cards , and for windows 7 there is a 6 gpu mod, is this atikmdag is good for other reason ?
If only those motherboards were actually available. There hasn't been stock for the asrock mining boards in ages.
If you find them in stock and cheap, buy a few. I had an extra H97 Anniversary still in the box that i bought on newegg 5 or 6 months ago for $70...i sold it on ebay a couple weeks ago for $200.
Windows 10 for free - You can fresh install and use windows 10 without activation indefinitely. You lose the ability to sync devices and customize some visual settings but you get updates and everything else works fine. If you need a activated copy you can install legit 7 and search for the still free "accessibility" upgrade microsoft provides for anyone who checks a box stating they use accessibility features (on screen keyboard, magnifying glass, etc.).
Warning to miners - Building a mining rig to make money is probably a bad idea. You are way late to the party. It is now a gamble at best. You can maybe break even if you have very cheap electricity, but you definitely won't get rich.
I started a few months ago and I kind of regret it (and I pay 9 cents/kw). People were warning not to get into mining back then but you never know if its just because they want more profit for themselves.
If you are a gamer I would suggest buying 1 or 2 good mining cards and put them in your gaming rig. Throttle your miner a little so it doesn't lag your computer. When you play a game you can stop your miner until you are finished gaming. I'm doing it with 2 gtx 1070s. Its about the only way I would advise people to get into mining now.

the new crimson 16.12 .1 and .2 need this steps from 16.9.2 to 16.11.1 is ok without this steps
Any idea what it means if you don't have an atikmdag.sys file in your Windows 10 system? I downloaded the copy referenced by @midoprince but am not sure if I can just copy it into C:\Windows\System32\drivers with no other consequence. I started seeing the problem on my Nitro+ RX 470's when I recently upgraded to Crimson ReLive Edition 17.1.2.
I just went ahead and copied atikmdag.sys to C:\Windows\System32\drivers right after I re-flashed the BIOS and rebooted with no change so I just reflashed with my backup BIOS and deleted atikmdag.sys from the drivers subdirectory and I'm back to stock.

i recommend crimson 16.11.3 for the nitro but setup the driver without AMD tools via device manager just extract the amd files to a folder and update the driver form amd files it will work stable for years

Those video cards are pretty freaking expensive, why those compared to other models?
xfx reference is the best on memory and core overclocking and not more manufactured , only the new OC and modified models some members here on the forum got 32 MH on xfx reference 480 8gb the blower fan version
at all cases it depends on the ventilation if u have a well cooled version of cards in bad ventilated place it will break u got my point ?
@midoprince Today I heard my friend says he can increase hashrate and searched for and found the piece, really mining world and I want some assistance in order to look in this world to something like what my friend told me, and I will improve the mining and Thanks

you can increase the hashrate by modifying the card Bios it can give you 25% to 30 % speed depend on the GPU quality and memory
I get about 23MH on Linux and 25.7MH on Windows 10 with my Powercolor Rx480 8GB. I tried this Bios and the hash rate became only 1.5MH and the system was unstable so I have gone back to the stock bios. In the modified bios, the clock speed is slower and the memory speed slightly higher than the original bios settings.
"I can get 2 GPUs going with the H97 Anniversary mobo, and EVGA PSU, but when I connect any more and try to boot, straight away I get a startup message saying I need to connect an extra Molex cable from the PSU into the mobo for extra power.

This is the pic of the motherboard:

It's a male, 4pin, so I apparently need a female 4pin Molex to EVGA PSU 6pin? This doesn't seem to exist, I can only find PSU 6pin to Male Molex
