How is this even possible with the amount of hashrate already on the network? I have no clue what is going on regarding this situation and any clarification on what is going on would be appreciated thanks.

Do you mean the mining difficulty will be down for a few hours or something?
@Truthchanter yes until this issue is resolved the majority of pools will be down unless they move to parity, last I checked difficulty was 60 terahash from 75 yesterday.

Solo/independent miners - only ~5%.
