"A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond."
Step 1 would be a) Make sure you mine by starting ethereal with the mining option -m ethereal -m b) You should see it mining after a while and little pickaxes in the console c) You will need to stop the program and restart the GUI in order to see how much ether you have mined. d) Start another process by using ethereal -m -dir=".ethereal2" e) Once you have two clients you can send ether between them. Both DO NOT have to be running at the same time. f) once you get to this stage its time to get into writing contracts such as the sub currency one which also examines how to use build an HTML5 app which can be used inside the GUI
There needs to be a first time users guide and I started one but the problem is the development is moving so fast it becomes out of date and the nature of the beast is that a first timers guide really does have to be both detailed but more importantly correct.
There is nothing worse for a new user than following a non working guide.
I think POC5 RC9 is very close to being good to go with maybe a few more tests.
