Greeter return value correct but I don't understand the encoding

I have successfully configured a private blockchain and deployed the example greeter contract. Using curl I can call the contract and this is the value returned:
0x0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000020000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000c48656c6c6f20576f726c64210000000000000000000000000000000000000000

This translates to 3 32byte values:
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000020
000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000c
48656c6c6f20576f726c64210000000000000000000000000000000000000000

The last of these is the string 'Hello World!' which is the expected value. So my question is what are the first two 32byte values?
Thanks in advance.
