I've approxiametly $1500 to spend on a mining rig. Looking for advise.
New to the forums. Thanks for having me.

I originally bought it for gaming some time ago, but it's just been collecting dust.
I am looking at 3 MSI Radeon R9 390X - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127872&cm_re=amd_r9-_-14-127-872-_-Product
Is this a good card? Is there a better option or value?
Whats a good power supply?
I was planning on going with the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS distro, is this a good choice?
I have watched hardware mining for years and read quite a bit about it, but this is my first build.
Any help is appreciated.

That GPU is overkill, you won't make your money back on it for a long while...the 4GB 370s are best right now. -

If you want to go cheap, not considering the dag file is increasing you can buy used 280x/7970 (I don't advice you anyway). Instead, if you want to buy new cards, go with 390 (300$ on newegg) because the difference between 390 and 390X is minimal and it's not justified by the 1MHS+. My advice is 390 if you consider to sell them at the end of the road. -

i second 390 8gb; msi brand running very cool (65-67c), r7 370 and good ol' hd 7950, if you could find them.
however, there are NO 390 for $300, except cheap gigabyte with bad reviews. msi is $339 with $10 off coupon -

I should be getting another 6 x MSI 390 sometime this week to add to the farm

R9-390X price is on average 2x of R9-280x, but the hash power is only 1.2x of R9-280x
so instead of 3x R9-390x you could have 6x R9 280x, which should give you almost ~2x hashrate
