My VGA monitor, not sure. I bought it from an end-of-life hardware liquidator for $5 a few years ago.

audio db of video reduced by 30.

I will take measurement of power directly from the PDUs, and graph it later.

Video is still not displaying for me unfortunately, is it working for everyone / anyone else?

I have noticed that video does not work on mobile. Try a different desktop browser.

Not sure if anyone has asked yet , but 1) Is there any AC into the room or 2) is there intake air coming from somewhere (and with or without louvers) and finally 3) What would the room temperature be in that room without any equipment in it on a summer day
  • kotariuskotarius Member Posts: 331 ✭✭✭
    @techtot

There is no AC. This is an 8-garage unit building with rafters all connected. So, if anyone has their garage door open, there is a draft. The temperature increases by 5C when all garage doors are closed.

The temperature of the room is the same as outside, but with a nice breeze caused by the exhaust fan. There is no hot air mixing with the rest of the room.

    Hello, great post

We have two questions 1: where can we find the stilts bios mod that you used on this project? 2: What did you use in the way of a broadband connection and switches ( how much bandwidth are you pulling per rig?)

    thank you
  • kotariuskotarius Member Posts: 331 ✭✭✭
    @etherfarmer

Here are links to the stilt bioses:

    kotarius: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1odJXgWbHUcIS9fAxaXB-nPD8WWH1sBdd_XBOe3F3jo0/edit#gid=0
    kotarius: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/0B2XVfIhkHZlfcVR0QzhlQlhJYTA

Broadband connection is a weak DSL. Bandwidth is negligible, i have not measured it. Switches are all old 48-port Netgears and Catalysts.

In an effort to reduce possibility of electrical resistance, we replaced the standard 18awg and c14 adapter with a straight-through 14awg c13-c14 2ft (60cm) cable. This was possible, since the PSUs are very close to the PDUs.

@kotarius how loud are those 80mm delta fans you have used on the 290s? I'm asking because my rigs are in my house and the stock coolers on reference 290s are just so LOUD. I have watercooled my reference 290s but that has turned into a pain in the butt because if I want to do any maintenance I have to drain the water loop, etc. I have to do maintenance because it seems that if you run a watercooled GPU non-stop you have to replace the thermal compound every couple of weeks for some reason... or maybe I'm getting some kind of catalytic corrosion - but anyway they start out great but their temps just gradually rise and rise over time.

Just wondering if I should dump the watercooling, replace the reference coolers and use 3 80mm fans like you did.
  • kotariuskotarius Member Posts: 331 ✭✭✭
@newmz The delta fans are louder than the reference coolers.

I am not an expert on water cooling, unfortunately cannot advise regarding that.

One thing you could do is flash lower voltage to R9 290s and also reduce their core clock, both of which would run the GPU colder. Also, you could try using 3-in-1 oil to clean up old paste and repaste with prolimatech. This should let you run fans slowly.

PS. R9 290 can run at 85-90C without any issue, so you may consider setting your maxgputemp to 95C and running the fans slower.

Hey @kotarius . It'd be interesting to see a breakdown of some of the costs, I know you did the shelving unit breakdown but some other stuff would be interesting as well :) perhaps a little summary for other people looking into doing something similar.

Coming from someone who has watercooled literally hundreds of cards you shouldn't have to replace thermal compound that often. What thermal compound are you using?

    congratulations for the farm

I have a large farm. i have to say that you guys are making fatal mistakes on building a new farm. some problems here >:)
    1. the power efficiency
the new 14/16nm GPUs can reach 0.18M+/W. you are using 0.13-0.14M/W 28nm old GPUs. this will kill the profit and make the ROI very very long. 0.14M/W is really not good for a brand new farm.
    2. temperature &noise
The whole working area is too small. it will be hot and noisy : reduce the PSU&cooler efficiency. more important, you guys can not work in the room for long. it will be hard to mantance.
    3. damage control
not enough space between the parts.
if any one get fire , you may lose alot.

welcome to the cruel competition >:)>:)>:)>:)>:)

You make it sound like he just bought all these GPUs at retail price, and this is a new thing. This is the gpuShack guy, he's been mining for a long time. This is but the latest project. :P

Also, how would a fire propagate with no combustible? And why would noise and temp become an issue now, if it wasnt before? (They wear ear protection)

And finally, its still 60% or so profit over upkeep costs, why would it be a bad investment? I also don't think he paid what you assume he paid. :P

So much for Cruel Competition :P

@crazyrooster Thanks for your advice, but somehow I don't think you gave it with the best of intentions. Still, best of luck. No miner is my competition, and neither are you (gpuShack sells to miners)
  • adasebadaseb Member Posts: 1,043 ✭✭✭
Right now you are better off sticking with the paid off gear you have rather than buying new gear even if its more efficient.

There are just too many people getting into ETH mining right now, and that's never a good sign. I'm probably going to go back to BTC mining soon.

I bought some of the RX470/480 but if I never get ROI on those cards I won't be surprised. I remember back in Summer 2014, making like $0.50/per day with my 280X's.

@bctopics I am using a compound that came in a little syringe with the XSPC 290 reference waterblock. It has "K3" on it and the XSPC brand but that's about all. I don't think my problem is with the thermal compound, I think there is some kind of corrosion going on, or some other thing that is maybe blocking waterflow. I have three 290s in a loop and maybe that's a bit much for the little pump I have. I'm going to try to open up one of the waterblocks (I have a spare) and see what's going on inside.

    hi Everyone,

Ethereum Mining Monitor v1.1 is available for download from the app store:

    App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ethereum-mining-monitor/id1139650210?mt=8
    website: http://robegamesios.wixsite.com/ethminingmonitor

The app supports ethOS, added more colored backgrounds for different states of ethOS miner for this release.

    updates:
-bugfixes for unable to connect to Ethermine and Ethanol mining pools
-Now you can specify the number of cryptocurrencies to monitor in the Markets screen.
-Monitor any available cryptocurrency for price variation.
-Receive notifications when an ethOS mining rig is inactive
-Receive notification when a cryptocurrency being monitored reaches the set price criteria.

try it out, please rate it on the app store if you find it useful Smiley

PM me for feature requests. I would love to support more mining pools, mining rigs, etc. thanks

    With no bad intentions.
I used the similar structure 2 years ago while mining LTC. After few years you may find out my points.
    with no bad intentions again.
50kva in such a small room, any mistake/oxidation or small animal can cause fire. Now it's new, everything is fine. but with aging, be more careful. OK?
you can use infrared thermometers check all the wire connectors.

    anyway goodluck. :p

Let's see your farm compare to his so we can learn some best practices. I don't see how he can possibly lose money if the GPUs were already available.

we are developing free Android aplication for ethOS.
    https://forum.ethereum.org/discussion/7956/ethos-monitor-free-android-app

and also for few pools (Ethermine, Ethpool, Dwarfpool...) Try it.

    hi kotarius,
Where did you get the L and I beams from to mount your GPUs on? And those Aluminum sheeting with standoffs, where are they from as well? Thanks.

I got the L and I beams from home depot (website, special order). The Aluminum sheets with standoffs are from Spotswood http://spotswoodcomputercases.com/wp/
