Hi guys, thought experiment here, though a plausible one. The dominant mining software for Ethereum is quite new, and people will probably find small improvements.
Imagine that someone improves the code for a 2% speed gain. If everyone has this improvement, the difficulty goes up and the effect quickly disappears. Imagine though that a subset of half the miners had it, while half didn't. This would increase their share by 1%, for a value of about 240 ether per day.
Of course, such an improvement could already exist. By helping to contribute public improvements, miners can help ensure that they're not unknowingly in the group without the current best implementation for their hardware.
So the question is, if you made such an improvement, how would you license it? If you mine, how do you manage this?
