How do I get ether units?

Hi,

I have some bitcoin but I am quite interested in ethereum, I'm not very technically savvy so please forgive. I wanted to download the application but it said it was lynux based...

Anyway, I was wondering how I would go about getting ether currency units?

You'd have to mine them in a similar fashion to Bitcoin. Unfortunately, the mining software is very immature right now, so you'd have to download the source code and build it yourself if you want to start mining. If you're not a developer, I'd recommend waiting a few days for the GO client binaries to come out. That way you won't have to worry about building it yourself.

If you want to be a little more adventurous, you could do the following to get it running now:

    1. Install VirtualBox (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads)
    2. Download Ubuntu 13.10 (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop)
    3. Create a new Virtual Machine (follow the setup procedure in VirtualBox)
    4. Install Ubuntu 13.10 by starting your new Virtual Machine, selecting the .iso file you downloaded, and following the Ubuntu install procedure
    5. Install the Ethereum clients by following the build instructions on their wiki (https://github.com/ethereum/cpp-ethereum/wiki/Building)

Also, be aware that you are only mining ethers on the test network. You will not be able to keep anything you mined on the test network once the live network is launched.
