problem with GPU mining

mcmike313mcmike313 Member Posts: 27
so i am using ubuntu 14.04 3x radeon 390x i have been able to update the drivers either from amd site or from software manager doing the fglrx-updates or just fglrx but this results in after a reboot it hanging on the ubuntu screen with the grub file set with nomodeset etc

so i have given up on getting my display working as i am still able to ssh to the device
its currently trying to catch up to the current block in geth so i am happy with that

but when i try the following these are the issues i get

sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --initial
Found fglrx primary device section

sudo aticonfig --list-adapters

did i stuff up the install some how?
what would be the best course of action from here?
i have a feeling im prob going to have to do a fresh install and see what information comes out when they are ready to launch the genesis block but any information would be greatly appreciated and then i can benchmark 3 390x's

I was experiencing the MIT-Magic-Cookie error the other day as well.

I solve it by doing two things:

go back into your go-ethereum directory and type:
    git checkout master
    git pull
    make geth

The second thing I did was remove my video card drivers and reinstall them:
using instructions I found here to remove the drivers:
    http://askubuntu.com/questions/68306/how-do-i-remove-the-proprietary-ati-drivers
then I went through the regular way of install the drivers from the gui that I described on my blog:
    http://spacience.blogspot.com/2015/05/ethereum-gpu-mining-ubuntu-1404-lts.html

Make sure to reboot. Also make sure you just have one type of graphics card, stick with just AMD or just NVIDIA. I haven't been able to get it to work with both.

Btway, the 390x is a bit overkill. We'll switch to Proof of Stake long before you fill in that 8GB of ram (I hope).

I had the magic cookie error when trying to start Ethminer on a an ubuntu desktop box where I hadn't logged on yet - enabling autologon fixed it.

I followed these instructions: https://github.com/ethereum/go-ethereum/wiki/Mining with my R9 390 card, on Ubuntu 14.04.2 and it worked fine.

    Might be worth a try...

I had this until I started up geth --rpc console, and it stopped immediately.

@stuart You just posted to an 8 month old thread. I think they moved on a while ago :)

this is the only thread that addresses this problem, which is a recurrent one and it came back. the actual fix was this: sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --initial -f
  • stuartstuart Member Posts: 10
Actually, I was working on the wrong system. That didn't fix it. Kindly let me open this problem back up, please. It was working for a while, then stopped working after a reboot.

@stuart This problem is discussed in depth in recent threads. Just look through a couple pages on the forum. Topic has been beaten to death.

@390g, if you haven't fixed this, try logging in from tty console, maybe stopping X and trying from there and report your results.
