Relationship of dapps to Ethereum blockchain(s)?

Please excuse this naive question ... the learning journey has to start somewhere, right?
Does each dapp that's implemented using Ethereum Smart Contracts (with its own coin or token) have an independent instance of the Ethereum blockchain running, or do all dapps run on a single global instance of the blockchain?
I'd appreciate a link to a good tutorial on this area ... it will save you guys from having to read a lot of faff from me in future
