AlethZero and Mix both are just not ready for prime time and been having headaches with both so I'm moving to a less GUI intensive IDE.
Any thoughts or experience on either Embark or Truffle? Recommendations?

Truffle is easier out of the box, although be careful not to use it on a machine you're running a live geth on.
Embark is less opinionated and has better support for meteor if you can get it going.

If you want a quick test w/o having to setup your own box:
* Register in CLOUD9 (
http://c9.io)
* create a workspace, use template Ubuntu
* sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
* sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:ethereum/ethereum
* sudo apt-get update
* sudo apt-get install ethereum
* geth account new
* sudo npm install -g truffle
* git clone
https://github.com/ethereum/pyethereum/
* cd pyethereum
* sudo python setup.py install
* sudo pip install eth-testrpc
* testrpc
* open a new terminal screen and work away
