Geth console stops accepting input

Sometimes the geth console stops accepting input. I can no longer type. I cannot backspace. I cannot escape from this mode. It seems locked up. But it is still mining because the Etherium wallet shows new blocks being created.
The only solution seems to be to kill this process and start a new one. Anybody know why?
