Is there any statistical reason to join a pool?

I know that using a pool is simpler and easier to maintain, but, is there any statistical reason to use a pool?

For instance, maybe there is a breakpoint where it is statistically less likely to achieve a block when mining under some number of GH's?

Joan Ginther comes to mind: https://www.wired.com/2011/01/ff_lottery/

There is benefit in multiple smaller payments during the Poisson interval under an increasing difficulty but no benefit if the difficulty is flat or your own hash growth keeps pace.
