Geth downloading one block at a time, but not caught up with etherscan.io

Hello, and thanks in advance for any input that helps clear this up.

I've been working on getting an instance of geth up and running, and am running into an issue.

After a bit of searching around, my understanding is that if Geth is showing a very low number of blocks imported at a time, that it should be up to date. The following is a recent clip from Geth's output on my server:

I1024 15:23:41.886344 core/blockchain.go:1001] imported 1 block(s) (0 queued 0 ignored) including 7 txs in 6m47.556858753s. #2386088 [af50c0a3 / e1dda525]

As with other cryptocurrencies, I like to verify this by checking the current height against a block explorer. In this case, though, I'm seeing it appear to be >100,000 blocks behind. Both etherscan.io and etherchain.org show a current height of over 2,500,000.

I figure I either have to be missing something very simple, or need to figure out how to get Geth to collect blocks faster.

Thanks again for any input.
